Solar contract help for Texas homeowners

Texas has seen a solar sales boom, and a wave of homeowners who feel the deal they signed isn't the deal they were sold. We help Texans understand their agreements and pursue a fair resolution.

Why solar savings are tricky in Texas

In much of Texas, you choose a retail electricity provider, and there's no single statewide rule for how solar energy you send back to the grid is credited. Buyback plans vary by provider and can change when your electricity contract renews. Customers of municipal utilities and electric co-ops, such as in Austin or San Antonio, follow their utility's own solar rules.

That means a savings projection is only as good as its assumptions about your electricity plan. If a salesperson assumed a generous buyback rate you never got, or didn't mention that buyback terms can change, the numbers may never have been realistic.

What we see most often in Texas

  • Savings projections that assumed a buyback plan the homeowner never had
  • Loans with large fees folded into the balance
  • Systems installed but not activated for months
  • Hail and storm damage disputes over who is responsible for panels and roof repairs
  • Long leases and PPAs with annual escalators
  • Homeowners told a tax credit would cover a large share of the cost

Texas's newer solar rules

Texas passed a law in 2025 that regulates residential solar retailers and their salespeople. For agreements entered on or after September 1, 2025, solar agreements must spell out the cancellation period and how to send a cancellation notice, and the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) is phasing in registration and enforcement starting September 1, 2026. Texas's Deceptive Trade Practices Act and home solicitation rules may also apply to how a solar agreement was sold.

If you signed recently, check your agreement for the cancellation deadline right away. If you signed earlier, other protections may still be relevant. This is general information, not legal advice.

Texas FAQs

My solar company says my buyback plan changed. Can you look at that?

Yes. We compare what you were told about crediting your excess solar with your actual electricity plan and bills.

Does the 2025 Texas solar law apply to me?

It depends mostly on when you signed. Generally, its contract requirements apply to agreements entered on or after September 1, 2025. We'll look at your dates.

Hail damaged my panels and nobody will take responsibility. Can you help?

We can review your agreement's maintenance, warranty, and insurance terms and help document the issue.

Every agreement and every situation is different. Results vary, and no one can promise a specific outcome.
